Wind Down Sunday

Restorative Yoga

Give your mind, body and soul the opportunity to relax, renew and restore. Restorative yoga is a slow floor-based practice that uses lots of props and supports. Restorative yoga has a meditative and healing approach where the body can slow down, relax, heal, recuperate and renew. Restorative yoga is suitable for everyone, the challenge comes with slowing down the mind in our busy, busy worlds. Restorative yoga is a wonderful way to aid a healthy body and mind, the practice can improve our immune system, help reduce stress and anxiety and increase an overall sense of well-being. The practice is very grounding and safe. Restorative yoga can reduce cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and activate the parasympathetic nervous system. At it’s simplest incarnation restorative yoga is an opportunity to slow-down, chill-out and give yourself some well deserved ‘me-time’

Bring a yoga mat, drink, a blanket and cushion/pillow.

Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra is a form of guided meditation also known as yogic sleep. It’s usually practiced lying down with a teacher guiding the session. The practice draws our attention inwards, and we learn to surf between the states of wakefulness and sleep, where our body finds its natural state of equilibrium. Our breath balances and becomes quiet, unconscious and conscious aspects of the mind reveal themselves, and we fall into an innate state of deep, blissful awareness. Yoga Nidra takes us effortlessly into a state of harmonious, restful being. From here, we can be healed, restored and awakened to our deepest, all-knowing, all-welcoming self. Absolutely anyone can practice Yoga Nidra, but it has immense appeal for those who struggle to let go. It’s also perfect for those who have always been curious about the deep states of meditation they have perhaps read about or stumbled across themselves but have never been able to recreate. Yoga Nidra is said to be as old as yoga itself.

Hot Yoga Moves Sunday

Warm 26 Moves

This is a warm yoga class that consists of 26 physical postures and two breathing exercises. We will be heating Doddington Village Hall for this incredible practice.

Hot 26 Yoga systematically works every muscle, tendon, joint, ligament, organ and gland. It moves oxygenated blood to the cells of your body. By the end of the class, you’ll feel rejuvenated and re-energised.

Every posture prepares you for the next, and each proceeding posture gains from the previous one, resulting in incredible benefits that include improved posture, muscle and joint mobility, concentration, increased energy, and overall rejuvenation.

Pure Yin

Yin yoga is a quiet contemplative practice.

Yin yoga works deeply into our body with passive, longer-held poses.

It targets the deepest tissues of the body, our connective tissues –ligaments, joints, bones, the deepfascianetworks of the body and the meridians. This is contrast to a Yang yoga practice such as Vinyasa yoga which targets the muscles.

Yin yoga is based on the Taoist concept of yin and yang, opposite and complementary principles in nature. Yin is the stable, unmoving, hidden aspect of things.

Yin works on the connective tissues, these respond best to a slow, steady load. If you gently stretch connective tissue by holding a yin pose for a long time, the body will respond by making them a little longer and stronger.

About that Chris Stookes...

I am a Yoga Therapist, Teacher, and Health Coach. I have been practicing yoga forever but teaching yoga for over 15 years in yoga studios, community, private,  educational, and corporate settings. My yoga therapy is delivered on a one to one basis or in small groups. My notable collaborations include: NHS, Kent County Council, Hilton Hotel Group, Chatham Grammar School For Girls and Brompton Academy.

I am passionate in the belief that yoga can change our life on so many levels and in many ways. Yoga, in one form or another is suitable for everyone regardless of age, shape, size, mobility or flexibility. I originally took up yoga to compliment a haphazard running career, however, I was completely taken with the practice as a holistic approach for well-being.

A very innovative manager once asked if I thought "yoga would be beneficial for the young people we worked with?" Yup, I got myself trained... Alongside a deep immersion Yoga Teacher Training in India, I trained in Ashtanga Yoga, Trauma Sensitive Yoga, Yoga for Autism. Yoga Therapy, Restorative Yoga, Yin Yoga and Yoga Nidra.

My additional career path and academic studies have included my time as chef in London and Paris for sixteen years, teaching cookery in Essex. I once owned a beautiful restaurant in the City of Southend.

I worked in both the voluntary and statutory sector in a range of social welfare settings. I worked in criminal justice for far more years than I care to recall. I am a trained teacher, youth worker, level 2 gym instructor and have a couple of degrees.

In 2018 I overcame bladder cancer (there's a blog about that). There is a book I have been writing forever, I retired once, but foolishly opened up a yoga studio down by the creek! Covid put pay to that.

After a joyous spell of working in at my beloved Leeds castle, I now find myself privileged to be temporarily working for the NHS as a Health & Well-being Coach.

By far the biggest challenge with yoga is maintaining a personal practice. It's hard to regularly get on your mat life just gets busy and we might struggle to get into the right head space.

It is a huge privilege and so completely humbling to teach yoga in all its various guises, to be in 'that space' and see how people grow in their yoga practice. I absolutely know, and rather like that I'm not everyone's cup of tea and of course other teachers are always available.

The relationship we have with food, diet and nutrition is fundamental to our health and well being. Today, the western diet does not serve us well. I am grateful for my teachings on how to cook food properly. I have learnt that with care, compassion, self-love and a knowledge of how to manage our diet, our triggers and cravings we can bring about a deep satisfaction and improved health.

I practice a person centred therapeutic approach and have had many successful associations with people living with physical and psychological conditions.
